A Story From Ada - submitted by Regina Walker
This event takes place here in Ada, my hometown. I think I was about 10 or 11 years old at the time. I lived with my great Aunt Flora ( who raised me from birth ). And this was during the springtime. During "tornado season" as we call it here. Anyways, my aunt and I lived in a duplex house on the corner, which is still located on west 12th street.
Our side of the duplex set right next to the street. One night, I was lying on the couch, and it had been bad weather that evening. My aunt and I used to stay up until the bad weather would pass on, we then would go to sleep afterwards. Well, it was "all clear" in our area, so she said "lets go to bed", so, we were getting ready to go to bed, but we were in the living room, getting ready to go into the kitchen, when we heard a car drive up, the windows were up since it was warm outside. By the time we got into the kitchen, we heard a car door slam, it sounded like the car was right outside the kitchen window, by that time I was in the bedroom, and my aunt was still in the living room, and she said, "oh, I bet that's Ewell", ( her brother) my grandfather. My grandfather used to come over when the weather was bad and go with us to the storm cellar which was across the street, because he didn't have a cellar to go to at his house. So, next we heard the car door slam shut, then we heard my grandfather (Ewell) say, "Flora", (my great aunts name), Flora answered "yea?" and then she said "go to the back door, and I'll go to the front".
"This way if he goes to the back, you will be there, or if he goes to the front, I will be there". I went to the back door, but my grandfather wasn't there, and so, I went to the front thinking my grandfather went to the front, he wasn't there either. My aunt said, wonder where he went? We looked out to see his car, and there was no car parked in the drive, so my Aunt became worried, because we both heard a car drive up, we both heard a car door slam, we both heard him call my Aunts name. So, my aunt decided to call my grandfather's house, and my grandmother answered the phone, and my aunt asked if my grandfather was there my grandmother was surprised, because she didn't know what was going on. And my aunt told my grandmother the story of what happened, and my grandmother said, well, Ewell is in bed, has been for awhile, and he's fast asleep.
